According to
one particular legend, Filfla came into being when god was so angered by the
lewed behaviour of the inhabitants of one particular village that he made the
earth swallow it up and then ordered his angels to throw the rubble into the
sea; rubble which eventually
formed the islet of Filfla.
A bad
reputation isn’t the only thing Filfla has had to live with. An earthquake in the middle of the nineteen
century is said to have destroyed the only building ever erected on the islet;
a chapel that was found in a cave. Then,
till the seventies it was used for target practise by British forces.
Today,
thanks to it being turned into a nature reserved, Filfla is being largely left in
peace; observed - as it was on this occasion - from far away in Wied iz-Zurrieq (Qrendi).
